Interview with Varg Vikernes
What does your daily routine consists of and how’s the environment like in your penal institution?
We can spend an hour in the yard every day and, if we like, we can of course play football, volleyball, jog, sit in the sun (if the sun is not covered by clouds, of course), etc. Only imagination sets the limits. Personally, I use a football goal as a training device and I lift rocks – using them as weight manuals, taking pull-ups from the goal, etc. Apart from that, I have to spend 23 hours a day in the cell. If You are in a “better block”, You can work (only niggers’ work, though), but You get no money for it and it is forced labour, so I don’t see why that should be “good” in any way. You just have to work for them to be allowed to stay in a “better” block, where You can socialise with other inmates (other than in the yard only), for instance. My daily routine is getting up, training for an hour in the yard, then reading and writing (letters, articles and other) for the rest of the day; sometimes training another hour (push-ups, sit-ups, etc.) before I go to sleep. It’s okay, really, as I have a lot of time to read books.
Last year you released Daudi Baldrs, so feel free to write a bit about its concept, as well as your reference to the Hakenkreuz (being an ancient Indo-European symbol revered by nordic traditions).
Indo-European means Aryan. Aryan (in its purest form) means tall, blonde, blue-eyed, and athletic – or, to put it short, Nordic. Our Germanic culture, just like the Roman, the Greek, the Celt and the Slavonic, is Aryan. The ancient Egyptian, the ancient Persian (Arian, today “Iranian”), the ancient Indian, Sumerian, northwestern Chinese, and even some of the ancient American cultures, were all Aryan – that is, built by a population that was ruled by an Aryan elite. The word Aryan itself is Sanskrit and it means “loyal”, dedicated, faithful, noble, righteous, honourable and, actually, it means “foreigner” as well, simply because this is what the Aryan tribes were for the Native Indian population – the elite that ruled over them – and came into their lands from the north (Caucasus). Aryan derives from the word “arya”, that means “to raise oneself”, “to aspire to ascend”. The Aryan race is also known as the Caucasian race, the Indo-European race and, simply, the white race. The why is, simply, because after Atlantis was covered with ice our race settled in what is known to us as Caucasia (thus, the Caucasian race). We then spread out to what is known as Europe and India (thus the Indo-European race) and, finally, we are white (thus the white race). The Hakenkreuz/Swastika is of Aryan origin and, therefore, it is also a part of the Indian culture – that is, the “leftovers” of our Aryan high-culture that were there in ancient times (and that went under because the Aryans mixed their blood with the natives and, thus, lost their organisational abilities). Many of the secrets of our Aryan culture lie in the mountains north of India, hidden by the priests of Hinduism (the Veda part of it), in waiting for the Aryans to return to gain their ancient books of lore. When the British came to India, the priests thought that they had returned, but the British destroyed all the pagan wisdom they were handed by the priests, so they decided to hide what was left of it in caves in the mountains. Then the Germans sent their scientists to India and were greeted with open arms by the priests and were allowed to read the ancient books. Some hundred of these priests were actually found dead in the ruins of Berlin, in 1945, having committed collective suicide. Just think this over: why do You think Fieldmarshall Rommel was so eager to get to India in the first place? The Judeo-Christian British pigs destroyed the pagan books, but the National Socialist Germans did not! Think about it and weep over Germany’s loss in the second war!
The idea behind Daudi Baldrs is as follows: the first track, Daudi Baldrs, means Balder’s Death, and is all about our people losing its meaning of life when Judeo-Christianity was forced upon us – as shown in the belonging painting, where a Norseman is forced to accept the Jewish pig-religion. The second track, Hermodr á Helferd, means Hermod on a Journey to Hel. This is all about us seeking the meaning of life through pagan rituals and lifestyle – as shown in the belonging painting, where the Nordic women dance happily in the blessed nature of Mother Earth. The third track, Bálferd Baldrs, means The Funeral Pyre of Balder (or directly translated, Balder’s Fire-Journey). This is when the meaning of life is burned on the fire, as our own brothers and sisters start to force the Jewish pig-religion unto us – as shown on the belonging painting, where Norsemen torture other Norsemen, which by the way was how they managed to get others to “accept” Judeo-Christianity (a very sad historical fact). The fourth track, I Heimr Heljar, means In the Home of Hel. This is what the women (see track two) find when they seek the meaning of life in the spiritual world. They venture into the Vyrdr (the web of nature’s spiritual side) and find the light. The meaning of life, symbolised by the life-preserving Hammer of Thor (the Swastika). Hel (the Goddess of the Underworld, and the name of her home as well) is a symbol for the subconscious and, thus, the women seek the meaning of life in their own mind, by traveling into the subconscious (a spirit world). Fifth track, Illa Tidandi, means Bad News. This is all about what happened to our forefathers who found the truth, the meaning of life. They were burned at the stake as “Satanists”, “witches”, and “Devil worshippers” – as shown in the belonging picture where the women are burned alive. The sixth and final track, Møti Ragnarokum, means Towards Ragnarok (id est Towards the Twilight/new beginning of the gods). This is what lies ahead of us. It will be a sunset, where the meaning of life descends in the horizon into the ocean, or it can be a sunrise, where the meaning of life will ascend into the skies… It is up to us to decide, through our actions, through our way of life! That is what Daudi Baldrs is all about.
Last year, David Palser and Misanthropy Records released a video for Dunkelheit. How did it all come together in the first place and, particularly, was it your intention to shoot it at Lancashire (a place known to have been associated with witchcraft)?
The video was shot in Lancashire, all right, but it includes a lot of shots taken in Scandinavia as well. Diamanda, of Misanthropy Records, wanted to make a Burzum video and asked me about it. I then sent her some instructions to what song to use and how it was supposed to be. They (Misanthropy Records and this Palser guy You mentioned) did what they could to make it as I wanted it to be and then added some ideas of their own, which turned out to be just great. I wanted a lot of nature settings in making the video some sort of “fairy nature” film with music in the background, so I guess they felt that Lancashire was a natural place to tape (parts of) it. The runes were an idea of theirs but, as I see it, it suits perfectly, as the runes are symbols of our Norse culture and mythology and, thus, make the whole thing more “fairy” by underlining the “nature religion” aspect of the whole thing.
Witchcraft is all about Paganism. The word “witch” itself derives from the Celt culture and is, as far as I know, simply a title for a type of healer/magician. Later it has become a very negative word and has been associated with “Satanism” and the likes, probably because the Celts worship the Horned God (Pan), a male symbol for certain forces in nature (the Celt Horned God and the Greek Pan are, by the way, the same as our Vidarr). Witchcraft is white magic but, of course, everything natural, healthy and sane is “satanic” in the eyes of the Judeo-Christians.
Were you not in prison as a consequence for killing Euronymous, how do you think your future would have differed (both musically and personally) given the fact that you did depart from everything that concerned either Black Metal or Satanism in a quite radical fashion?
In the early nineties, I called my philosophy of life “Satanism”. This was because I interpreted the word “Satan” as meaning “Adversary”. So, my “Satanism” was never really Satanism, and it was just all about me being an adversary to the Jewish faith. When I understood that nobody else understood the word like that, I simply stopped using it (in early 1993). My ideology and philosophies of life were the same but I started to name it better; that’s all there is to it! As for being (for example) a National Socialist, an Odinist, a Wotanist, a Pangermanist, a Scandinavian, a pagan, a heathen, an elitist, etc., those are just different “descriptions” for the same thing. National Socialism is just a modern version of Odinism; there are slight differences, but they are insignificant. In other words, the people who fail to understand that Wotan is just another name for Odin, just like Woden, Voden, Oden, Odinn, Gwodan, Wodan, etc., are ignorant and should understand that instead of criticising me for having “mixed ideas” about myself. It’s as stupid as criticising someone for saying that they want to save Mother Earth one day and then the next day they want to save Gaia or Tellus! I mean, what’s the difference? You see my point here?
As for the first part of Your question, I stick to reality and prefer action to dreams. What happens, happens, and is meant to happen. There are never any alternatives to what happens: c’est la vie!
It has been known that you and Faust have sort of rekindled after a couple of years of estrangement and fervent antipathy, so do you account that his bitterness towards you during the last couple of years, mainly by testifying against you in court, was actually founded?
Bård did not know the circumstances surrounding Euronymous’ death, as he thought I had killed for “dishonourable” reasons, but he later changed his mind, as that wasn’t the case at all. Euronymous had plotted my death and he made plans to kill me first with an electroshock gun (like the ones used by guards and the police), then tying me up and torturing me to death in some desolate place. Of course, after getting to know that, his views changed drastically. I mean, why should he blame me for killing Euronymous when he had such plans for me? And it was not only Bård, by the way, who has ended up changing his mind about me and the killing, because when people get the correct information, unlike the information given to them by the Jew press (newspapers), they have to modify their views on the ground You know. If You want to buy a car and find out that the car is about to fall apart, You cancel the bargain, right? Unless You are a complete idiot, of course (You see my point?). Yeah, it is right he gave testimony against me in court the first time. Well, he said nothing in court, but when they read statements given to the police at an earlier stage, he confirmed that what he said to them was correct and, by doing that, he gave testimony against me in court. You have to consider his age at the time; I think he was 19, or even 18 years’ old at the time he gave interviews to the police. He “believed” that I had killed Euronymous without any honourable reasons, and understood that it was best for him to “play along” with the cops and pay me back for what he believed I had done, as much as he could. That is one aspect of this, but the other is that he had a really shitty lawyer who was on the police’s side from the beginning, trying to nail as many for as little as possible. So, You could say a combination of pressure from the police, from his own lawyer, and from the lie-propaganda of the press made him act dishonourably towards me. In the second trial against me, in November 1997, when they sued me for some 44 million kroners (about 6 million USD), he acted honourably and did not give testimony against me; on the contrary, he told the court that his last testimony was a result of pressure from the police and revenge thoughts. Bård was a young and inexperienced teenager when he got into this trouble. Today he is a man with experience, and with enough honour to admit his former errors. He knew he acted wrong, and I believe he will never act like that again. I payed for his errors, and that is bitter for me. Still, there is nothing to do about it and what matters is the future, not the past! It is human to revenge: gods forgive! My role models are gods, not humans. I doubt if we will be able to be friends like others after this but, as I see it, there is no hostile feelings between us – only a certain degree of reservation. We are not petty subhumans who let their feelings control life (remember that)!
In terms of literature, you are said to admire the works of both Nietzsche and Plato but, besides both, do you happen to like any fictional or romantic literature (like Baudelaire, Shelley or Stoker)?
I know who Bram Stoker is, of course, but I don’t think I have heard of Mary Shelley (the “French vampire” author?) or Baudelaire. As for Stoker’s Gothic setting, I think that it’s fascinating, but (always a but) I don’t find the story itself all that appealing. However, I am not really in a position to talk too much about this, as I have never read any books by him, and have only seen some films based on his book(s). This is probably not the right place to say this but, to be honest, I believe this “vampire thing” is more a thing that appeals to women and dreamers. The drinking of blood is something sexual, an exchange of bodily fluids. The vampire is a tragic figure You can pity and, at the same time, fear. In short, it’s a very “womanish” thing appealing to the… feminine side of us; the romantic feelings, so to speak. I find it fascinating too (that’s not it), but I find other subjects more fascinating, so I do not find the time to read books by authors like Bram Stoker.
As you said, I like Nietzsche and his view on Judeo-Christianity, women and “good” and “evil”. I liked his Also Sprach Zarathustra and Jenseits von Gut und Böse, but no doubt my favourite book of his is The Antichrist. Apart from Nietzsche, I liked Niccollò Machiavelli’s Il Principe, Plato’s The State and, of course, there are a lot of other philosophers that have many good points, so to speak. Still, I only find Plato, Nietzsche and Machiavelli really good. Apart from that, I mostly read books about mythology, history, different scientific subjects and similar. Fictional literature is not my cup of tea. When it comes to poetry… let’s just say that it’s not my cup of tea either.
Recently, your book Vargsmål has been released. It is said to be a work dealing with both Nordic and German pagan traditions of old, but feel free to give a more in-depth perception of it.
Its essence is the Nordic philosophy of life: as simple as that. However, as it is meant as a defense speech for me as well – a reaction to all the lie-propaganda in the Jew press – it includes a lot of “personal” information as well, which in many ways makes it not that interesting after all. I have been working on a new book for the last four years now, dealing with one subject only: our Germanic philosophy of life – and I look forward to be finished with that.
Vargsmål is really just interesting to Scandinavians, as they are the only ones who know what I am talking about in the book anyway.
In contrast with your other records, Filosofem had a particular luxurious release. Why this album in particular and what have you tackled about in terms of a concept?
Filosofem is a reinterpretation of our folklore, like Daudi Baldrs is an interpretation of one of our myths. It is all about giving our folklore new meaning, or better, additional meaning. I haven’t seen the album for a long time now, since a couple of months after it was released in January 1996, so I really don’t remember all the texts and lyrics (meaning, I can not say too much about it).
As a final question, feel free to share your thoughts on your impressions, notions or ideas you have about Portugal.
Well, I don’t know all that much about Portugal, really. I know You colonised East Timor, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola and probably some other places as well. I also know You destroyed all the infrastructures in all of Angola and Mozambique before You handed the lands over to the natives. Apart from that, I know You are of Roman origin (id est of the Roman people) and not much else, really. I have never had anything to do with Portugal before, so I haven’t had any reason to try to find out more about it.
